From New York City to Buffalo, New York faucets deal with cold winters, older buildings and water that ranges from soft to moderately hard. Call (888) 554-0426 and we connect you with an independent contractor who serves your area.
Call the number on this page, tell us your city or zip code and what the faucet is doing, and we connect you with an independent local contractor. Our service is free to homeowners. You agree on the price and timing with the contractor and pay the contractor directly.
New York has dense city apartments, old upstate houses and suburban homes. A faucet in a Manhattan co-op faces different problems than a spigot split by ice in Buffalo. That is why we build local pages for each city, with the details that matter there.
Pick your city to read about the faucet problems we see most there, the neighborhoods we help, and what to ask a contractor. We are adding more New York cities over time. If yours is not listed yet, you can still call.
Soft water, pre-war buildings, shared plumbing and real winters.
Lake-effect cold, moderately hard water, and many older doubles.
Soft water, hillside homes and two-families above the Hudson.
Snowy winters, moderately hard water and older homes by the lake.
Heavy snow, moderately hard water and older student rentals.
Soft water, cold winters and historic rowhouses and flats.
Harder water, salt air near the Sound, and a mix of co-ops and older homes.
Soft water, older two-families and shared plumbing in a dense city.
Soft water, condo towers downtown and older homes around them.
Long winters, moderately hard water and many pre-war homes and doubles.
Faucet problems differ across New York because climate, building age and water hardness vary. Winters bring freezing and burst pipes. Older homes and pre-war buildings have old valves and pipes. Water is soft in the New York City area and moderately hard in several upstate cities.
Utility-reported data puts New York City, Yonkers, Albany, Mount Vernon and White Plains in the soft range, so heavy scale is uncommon there and worn parts and old pipes matter more. Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are moderately hard, and New Rochelle and Utica are estimated harder, so thin mineral crust and clogged aerators are more common.
| City | Water hardness (utility-reported) |
|---|---|
| New York City | Soft |
| Buffalo | Moderately hard |
| Yonkers | Soft |
| Rochester | Moderately hard |
| Syracuse | Moderately hard |
| Albany | Soft |
| New Rochelle | Hard |
| Mount Vernon | Soft |
| White Plains | Soft |
| Utica | Moderately hard |
New York has cold winters, and upstate cities get heavy lake-effect snow. Hard freezes are normal, and a deep cold snap can freeze pipes in exterior walls, garages, porches and top-floor units. Outdoor spigots with hoses left on can split. Summers are warm and humid, which can hide slow leaks and speed up corrosion.
Many New York homes are old. Pre-war apartment buildings, brownstones, two-families and century-old upstate houses often have original valves and pipes. Many New Yorkers rent or live in co-ops and condos, so a leak can reach neighbors and the repair may involve a landlord, a super or a board.
Whatever the problem, there is a page that explains it. Each one covers signs, causes, what a repair involves and what changes the price.

Remove and drain hoses in fall, shut off the indoor valve to outdoor spigots and drain them. Insulate pipes in garages, crawl spaces and exterior walls, keep heat on when you are away, and know where your main shut-off is. Never use a torch to thaw a frozen pipe.
After a freeze: Cracked pipes may only leak once they thaw. If you see water, shut off the main valve and call a pro. See our outdoor faucet repair guide and emergency faucet repair guide.
Ask for the contractor’s license number and proof of insurance, then check them yourself. Get the full price in writing before work starts. Ask what the warranty covers on parts and labor. The homeowner is responsible for confirming the license and insurance required for the work in New York.

It depends on where you live. Utility data shows New York City, Yonkers and Albany in the soft range, and Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse in the moderately hard range. Hard water can crust spouts and clog aerators over time.
Keep heat on, insulate pipes in exterior walls and unheated spaces, remove hoses and drain outdoor spigots. Open cabinet doors on very cold nights and know where your main shut-off is.
It depends on your lease or building rules. Tell your landlord, super or board first and ask who should hire and pay for the repair.
